Why not sell these barrels on the emissions trading market? PDF Print E-mail

Because it is not possible. Under the Kyoto Protocol, an emissions trading market was set up to pay for the absorption of emissions created by a country or company. The emissions trading market covers transactions involving the waste products of fossil fuel consumption, and our objective is to prevent the creation of this waste.

We do not want to continue with the Kyoto CO2 absorption business, because it forces Ecuador to give up its rights over its forests and territory, such as through the tree plantation model, and to cede the custody and management of its protected areas. It also implies a transfer of responsibilities that should be borne by the industrialized societies.

Paying to keep the crude oil in the ground also reinforces the call for a moratorium on the expansion of the oil frontier and a shift towards a post-oil civilization.
